Final GODDESS ARC Giveaway!!

9780062012036_0_Cover

Can ONE woman give away NINE advanced reader’s copies in THREE weeks?

Heck yeah.

What we have here is a regular bonanza. And I need a bonanza because I got really sad this week.

Boston hasn’t been my home in many years, but my family is still there, and the Boston Marathon has always been a big event for us. It goes right through the center of my hometown–Ashland–and my clan and I are accustomed to hanging out in a relative’s front yard, shaking our heads at the lunatics jogging by who still have about 22 miles to go before they hit Heartbreak Hill.

This year, heartbreak happened after the hill.

I have a lot to be grateful for. My eldest sister Margaret was at the finish line to cheer in a friend who had run the marathon. Luckily, her friend ran the marathon in three hours and six minutes, so Mags was long gone before the bombing–but to tell you all the truth, I’m still a little shaky over that one.

I think we’re all a little shaky over this one, even people who have never been to Boston, so I want to give something a try. When I was in high school, I started this circling note called “The Things To be Happy About List”. I would list things that made me happy, like: That street lights know exactly when to turn on at night. Or: The way laughter and yawns are both contagious, but neither of them kill you. I then passed the note around encouraging other people to add things they were happy about to the list, and on and on it went.

In light of the tragedy in Boston, I think we all need to remind ourselves of what’s really important. I know I do.

As always, I want all of you to chime in. To lift my spirits–and maybe to lift yours–I want everyone to leave a comment telling me one thing you are grateful for today, and we can start a new list.

A Gratitude List.

Me? I’m grateful my sister’s friend is a really fast runner.

Your turn.

The giveaway ends Friday, May 10th, and as always, it is international.

  1. I am so grateful for my family. That they are happy, healthy and safe. And that I get to spend my life loving them.

    • A gratitude joke:
A kid walks into the classroom. He is a little sad and upset. The teacher asks him, “What’s wrong?” The boy replies, “Uh, I hate my life.” The teacher is a little confused. “Why do you ‘hate’ your life?” The boy just shrugs and mutters something. The teacher is now baffled. “Do you have fresh food on your plate?” “Well, yeah.” The teacher refuses to let go of the matter. “Do you have a roof over your head? Are there any clothes in your wardrobe?” The kid is now the one that’s surprised. “Well, yeah. But, like, it’s boring.” The teacher starts to laugh. “What’s boring, your wardrobe?” “What!? No, my life!” “Ok, then. DO you have a proper dictionary button somewhere? Or maybe a muter?” The kid looks at him and starts mumbling again. The teacher just looks at him. The kid is kind of scared. “What’s wrong? IS it my face?” The teacher just sits there. “Oh, you want to know what’s wrong with my life.” The kid sits there and starts counting off what’s wrong. “My sister, my brother, my friends, my money problem….. What’s wrong?” And the teacher just smiles and says: “Oh, nothing. IT’s just that since you don’t have a mute button, then I will. If I don’t talk, then neither will you.” TO this day, you can’t hear the teacher.

    • I’m grateful for the flood of the Avon River in Stratford-Upon-Avon, England in July 2007.
I know that that sounds strange.

Every year before this, as I was growing up, my family would rent a canal boat out for a week each year, always in July.
I believe them to be the best memories I have of my childhood, my sister and I have so
many fond and funny memories from those boat trips.
The flood of 2007 stopped us from going that year, we went once more in 2008, but the flood and the economy had killed the boats.
My parents changed the timeshare when offered and we never went back.
From 2006 onwards my parents relationship was getting worse, and they’re not together
      anymore.

During their decreasing happiness, if had we continued going on the boats, I doubt they
would’ve been happy trips to remember, too much tension in quite a small space.

The boat memories are the best memories I have of my family from my childhood.
Therefore I am grateful to that flood, it stopped us from going on the boats, and now I only have fond memories of them, no horrible ones to sway the happiness.

I may go back with my sister one day, be a kid again.

      • It took me a couple of days to think through everything, but I suppose that’s one thing I’m really grateful for.

I believe we’re also grateful you have the patience and stamina to read all of these. :)

This thought occurred to me while I was in the middle of playing, fully immersed into the groove of the song. At the same time, someone else, especially in third world countries, is living a completely different life, one filled with sweat, pain, and tears. Here I am, enjoying making music with friends, whereas they may never have a keyboard to run their fingers across. I have my family, particularly my mom to be thankful for, who brought me to my piano lessons ever since I small, who pays for my lessons now.

I go to Wellesley, and that’s the halfway point of the marathon, and having been a part of the Scream Tunnel cheering the very runners who may or may not have been there at the finish line at that very unfortunate time makes me shiver in dread. Things are hectic right now, but I really try to look at the positive aspects of this week – spring is here, flowers are blooming, leaves are growing, the weather is warm. I just hope that everything is alright at the end.

Just now, suspect #2 of the Boston Marathon Bombings is in Custody, so that is a huge sigh of relief, even if I am in the other side of the world, that is something to be exhaled about, I didn’t know there was this huge pressure building within me but I am more than joyous to know that this is a step ahead, especially for the people of Boston and those concern. We’ll wait for further information.

Back to what I am grateful for, aside from the BMB,
I am grateful for the lightness that brightens everyday, and those darkness that makes us feel lonely, weak, and lost but at the same time, makes us realize that we are not alone, we are just independent, that we are stronger than we thought, and just at first lost but when we look closer, we are going to a path that is destined for us, made by us.

We can never see how beautiful the star are without the darkness filling it, especially the fireworks that fills darkness with colors. Also, when the day’s gloomy, when the day is filled by rain, we can never see the beauty of rainbow after it…

After the bitterness and things to be overcame, it’s brightness and success that awaits us.

    :D

Me? I’m grateful for a lot of things, as is, it seems, everyone who has posted on this blog.
I’m grateful every day for my wonderful family and friends who (almost) never tire of hearing me rant about Greek mythology or the book that I’m readings or the story I’m writing. Im even grateful for my brothers, who were apparently gifted by whatever supernatural force with the uncanny ability to annoy me.
Nevertheless, more often than not I think about how lucky I am to have a love a reading, and a passion for writing. Without the stories I have discovered and the ones bouncing tirelessly in my head my life would lack a certain…je ne sais que. However, I do know that my stories make my life brilliant, and I thank fate for giving me the gift. (Even though after reading and re-reading both Starcrossed and Dreamless I cannot help but hate the Moirai with all my heart…)
I am glad that your sister is safe, though. My dad was on a business trip near Boston at the time of the bombing, and I am also grateful every single day since that nothing happened to him.

  382. I am grateful for my family, friends my health and life in general.. To have your grandparents still around on both sides of the family is pretty awesome, to have amazing friends who you can turn to when you need to talk. To sum it up, I’m grateful for people who care and reach out to people in their time of need.

My brother who worries so much about me and my health
My bestest friends in the world who make me laugh and are always there when I’m down
Education that I love and cherish
All the authors in the world who can make me cry, laugh, and groan at the same time
Books are the quiet and peaceful solace in the midst of my hectic life
Chocolate the guilty pleasure that I indulge WAY too often
    Ice Cream- Ditto
My imagination that dreams up impossible situations that I have to shake my head at
Doctor Who – the giggle/awe time desperately needed after a sad time
House of Anubis – a TV show that feeds my addiction to Egyptian/Greek/Roman Mythology
My phone – otherwise I would never be able to keep in contact with my AMAZING friend who lives 14 countries away
Freedom – the one thing I’ve known my entire life but don’t know how to enjoy
Laughter and Music – the two things that stop my insane self from going REALLY insane!

I know that all these things are materialistic and in the end when I die, all these things won’t matter anymore but I like to count them anyway. What sort of human would I be if I didn’t? :-)

Strangely, I’m also grateful for the people in my life who have let me down, yes it was bad, and yes what they did completely broke me at times, but if they hadn’t done that, I don’t think I’d be who I am, I’d be a much weaker person.

However, to put it simply, I am grateful for the great writers and authors out there; without whom books would never have been produced; great stories would never have been told; and all of us readers would never have gotten the chance to escape in to the fantasy realms that the writers had conjured in order for us to evade the reality of this world and everything which we take for granted and are ungrateful for to appreciate a single story. (Yes, I’m talking about the starcrossed trilogy!)

“Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.”

I am grateful for my family always there for me, youth group, my friends, my clarinets that were given to me, my teachers, a house, being able to read so i can read more books, having a computer and many more. There are small things that are taken for granted so much like not having a war in my country, having indoor bathrooms, having food everyday, and school that many people don’t get. So i guess i am grateful the most for the life and lifestyle i have.

  491. I am greatful for my husband, my children, my mom, brothers and supportive friends. I am also greatful to be an avid reader and dive into these beautiful and wonderful worlds that these amazing authors introduce us to. I am greatful for you and all the other amazing authors. <3

Im grateful for a lot of things. some I might not even know of.
1)I’ve heard of lots of people not having fathers or mothers . I’m lucky I have both parents
    2) books. whenever I need to escape life I go to a book and my mind only focuses on the book
    3) friends. because its so hard to make some when you’re quiet and into books
    4) a home! a roof over my head! my father always tells me to work hard or I’ll end up in the street weather is changing so I’d like to stay safe in my home , so I’m lucky for that.
    5) technology. we are advancing in technology and save much more lives. we can do things we couldn’t before and it changed everyone’s life including mine
    6) this contest. I dont have enough money to get the book and I’m pretty sure id have to wait really long to read this book. with this contest at least I’d have the chance of getting this book!

I have a lot more things I am grateful for, some I might not know I am grateful for but I thought of this off the top of my head.
one last one: life. I’m lucky I can live because I see so many people dying or whatever so I guess I’m lucky . :)

  505. Samantha says:

I’m grateful that I go to a good high school that helps pay for part of our AP exams (mine start tomorrow) so that those who don’t have enough money to pay the full amount for all the AP tests they’re taking are still able to take them.

  506. I’m grateful for my wonderful mom who puts up with everything I do and my dog tears up. Also for the rest of my immediate and extended family. Even though I do have my health, I know if I didn’t I would be able to lean on them for support.

  510. I’m grateful for my family and friends. They are the rocks in my life, and I’d be lost without them. I’m also grateful my brother’s girlfriend is a fast runner – like your sister’s friend – and she was done with the Boston Marathon several hours before the bombs went off. She was nowhere near the finish line at that point, and I’m so grateful for that.

  511. Amairany Ra says:

i´M GRATEFUL FOR AWAKE THIS MORNING

  512. Kaitlin Snider says:

I have a lot of things I’m grateful for, but I’ll list three.

I second the above comment about the AP exams. I’m able to take two AP tests in the next week because of the much lower price for those who can’t pay the full price.

I’m thankful for my great friends and family that can make me smile and laugh every single day.

I’m thankful for my passion for reading. I can’t imagine being one of those people that hardly read at all.

Thank you for the giveaway. :)

I am grateful for all of the sacrifices my mother has made to help me in life.

  529. Valeria says:

That is a tricky question. Of course, I realize that nobody’s going to read this comment so that gives me the liberty to answer it a little bit more crazy than most. The question never said that we had to be deep and philosophical about it so I wont.

    1. Peanut Butter
    2. Wi-Fi
    3. Mother Nature
    4. Marvel/Stan Lee (the man’s a genius)
    5. Meat

What I’m trying to say is that while I know that this question is supposed to be a thoughtful one, and I have thought of it, it doesn’t have to be serious. In this day and age many people are always so quiet and serious and they don’t know that being cooped up and working all the time isn’t good! Go out and have fun for once because before you know it everything you take for granted my all be gone, leaving you wondering what you did wrong. Believe me I know.

  530. Joanna W. says:

Honest to goodness, I am most grateful for my parents. I don’t alway show it best, but I am. My parents had me late in life (mom 40, dad 41). Especially when I was younger, I sometimes regretted having older parents, mostly because our taste in things were no where in sinc. But now that I am older and somewhat wiser, I am grateful for my older parents. They’re more stable compared to the everyday parents and have always been more supportive in my 27 years than others. I don’t think… No, I know that I wouldn’t have made it though the time in my life when I when my health was at a major stand still if not for them at my side. I hate to think of the day when one or both of them will be gone. Therefore, I am definitely thankful for the parents that I was given. If anyone out there has perfect health and someone supportive to watch out for you/love, then you are truely blessed. Because to me, those are the top two things to be most grateful for in life. =)

  531. I’m probably most grateful for the little things in life that bring joy to us even when we’re sad beyond belief. Yanno, like books, my stuffed animal duck, photography, things like that! :) Thanks so much for the giveaway, Josie! You rock! And I’m so glad your sister is safe.

  532. I am simply grateful to be alive. I found out recently how many things could have gone wrong and without some amazing people in the medical profession I would not have been born and without my family’s vigilant care I would not be able to walk. So those are the things I am grateful for.

  533. There’s too much to list but number one has to be my family.

  538. Celeste says:

I’m grateful because, despite my being a loner, I know I always have someone I can count on. My parents, my boyfriend, my few but amazing friends, my grandmothers and so on… I know they will always be there for me and I will be there for them too, even if I think sometimes it’s hard for them to see it.
I’m also grateful for all the chances I had (and I was given) in my life, the chance of studying at university and abroad, travelling, getting to know great people who often live pretty far from me (unfortunately). I wouldn’t say I’m grateful for the job I have right now cause I kind of hate it, but considering the situation in Italy I guess I’m actually lucky! And last but not least, I’m grateful for the existence of writers like you Josie, the ones that when reality sucks, let us fly in this fantastic world and make us forget for a little while all the problems.

  539. Debbie says:

I’m grateful for talented author’s because without them What would we read

I’m grateful for my grandma. Everytime if i need someone to talk, i can go to her. She always say true things to me- even if i don’t like it. So: I’m very grateful for me grandma.

  549. Felicitas Eichstaedt says:

I am grateful for this life, I mean if you think about it what are the odds that you are born exactly the way you are now in this world on this planet it’s like one in a million and we have it all :)

  550. Ashley says:

I’m grateful for books and the wonderful stories they help me escape to.

  551. I am grateful that my 2-year old has likely outgrown at least of his food allergies (FPIES). His GI doctor wants us to do a food challenge, and I am both excited an terrified. But I am optimistic and so grateful that we found this doctor when others didn’t believe there was anything wrong.

  552. Makayla says:

Ugh can’t wait I’ve loved these books from the beginning and just to think there could be a possibility that I could get and ARC is amazing. So I’m greatful for all my favorite authors (especially you) for filling my life with some many happy memories that I get to share with the characters

  553. Sophie says:

When I was in third grade, I had an apendicitis. I was medi-vaced from Nantucket to Boston Children’s Hospital for a series of tests and an emergency appendectomy. After my surgery, I had to stay overnight an a room that I shared with another girl, about my age. She was from Africa, and she had severe back problems. Her family couldn’t afford the extensive health care that she needed desperately, but luckily, she was sponsored; she was flown to the states to have her treatment paid for her. She was in excruciating pain most of the time, but she was getting better every day. This experience caused me to see how lucky I am. I am grateful for being in a family that can afford health care. I am grateful because I know my family will always be able to provide for me, and it saddens me that not every kid can say the same. I am also grateful that there are people in this world who have the kindness and generosity to help others who need it. Knowing that there will always be people like those who sponsored my roommate lifts my spirits and inspires me to become one of them. I am grateful for those who give.

  554. DeeDee Griffin says:

I’m grateful that my dog, Gus, who has cancer, is still with us.

  555. Lilian says:

I’m grateful I wasn’t born in the past. Things aren’t perfect now, but it would be so much harder to be a girl hoping to enter a man’s field in the past (not that the wide world of genetics was even open for molecular exploration even a century ago). I’m grateful I’m one of the first generations of women with the option to remain unmarried. There’s still stigma against the single and childless, but it just keeps getting better. I’m grateful that I live in a community where my peers and I can find our gender expression and orientation without (much) fear of homophobia being directed at us. I’m grateful I got so much time with Mamaliles. I’m grateful for living in a millennium and nation where I never worry about clean water or food. I’m grateful I live in a free nation that people from other nations want to live in so badly they do whatever it takes to get here. I’m grateful that my whiteness is becoming less and less of a privilege, and more of an inconsequential fact, with every basing year. I’m grateful my depression has been absent for two weeks in a row now. Most of all, I’m grateful for my crazy, wonderful mind.

  556. Ashlee Frame says:

I am insanely grateful for my mother. She is the most amazing woman I know, and the only person in the entire world that I can count on to be there fore me whenever I need her, 100% of the time. Throughout my life she has not only put up with my eccentricities but embraced every part of me wholeheartedly, every flaw and every embarrassing aspect of my personality she loves. I honestly don’t know where I would be without my mother, and not just because she gave birth to me. She is the most amazing person in the world, and I am endlessly thankful that she will always be here for me, whether she is physically by my side or not.

  563. Moa Bergsten says:

Hi Josephine, my name is Moa and i´m from Sweden!

I´ve been giving this last question some real deep thought, because i really, really, really want to read a arc of Goddess, but i haven´t been able to settle for an answer.
Then, a moment ago, it just came to me.
There is soooooooo much in my life that i´m grateful for, for an example my friends, my family and all the possibilities that are presented for me and the fact that i´ve got everything i need and everyone i care about have a good life.
But that is such an ordinary thing most people have, that you forget to be happy about it. I admit that i forget it but when i started thinking about things to be grateful for, i mean things t be really grateful for, i keep coming back to one thing. The others. The ones that i don´t know. The ones that don´t have a good life.
Sure, i´m grateful for my life and for the people that are in it, but i´m even more grateful for the fact that there are others who has had a hard life, but gets a better one. That happy endings exist and that small miracles actually do exist.
My answer for your question is going to be the happy endings and the miracles that happen everyday. Like your sisters friend who run fast enough so that they weren’t anywhere near the bomb. That the bomb´s didn’t kill any more people than it did.
That bullies get caught, people who tries to kill them self don´t succeed, that someone somewhere gets cured from cancer.
Thats what i´m grateful for. The small miracles.

  564. I have so many things for which I am grateful. What stands out right now is that I am getting married in 10 days, my fiancé and I are happy, healthy, and have food and shelter. I’m also really grateful for all of the wonderful books that we have the ability to read and to relax with whenever want or need. So glad your sister and her friend are safe!

  565. I am grateful for my amazing, loving family who is supporting me in this crazy life adventure I am going through right now called Nursing School. I am also thankful for all these amazing YA authors who help me unwind at the end of a long day and help keep me sane amidst all this crazy nursing school stuff.

  566. I am grateful that I have (mostly) good health, that I am (relatively) financially secure, and that I indisputably have family who support me no matter what.

  567. Josefin says:

I’m grateful my grandpa is strong enough to keep enjoying life without the love of his life who passed away after 57 years by his side.

  568. I’m grateful for books, and the possibility to read whatever I want, whenever I want. It’s something a lot of us take for granted, but when I think about it, it’s one of the biggest liberty that we’ve got.

  569. Ashley s says:

I am grateful for the happiest and biggest smile that my 2 year old cousin gave me today when i gave him sweets. I will never get tired of that satisfying feeling when he smiles at me xxx :)

    my pets
    my good grades
the many clothes and shoes that I have
    that food in my kitchen
    my laptop
    my phone
    my camera
    EVERYTHING in life
